How to Be a Telecommuting Success
Telecommuting, otherwise known as "working at home," is a highly popular subject these days. Many people are seeking ways to avoid stressful commutes, high gas prices and hectic offices so that they can create a more balanced lifestyle.
Working from home may sound like a beautiful dream, but it requires a creative blend of self-discipline, effective communication skills, and resourcefulness. There are definitely many advantages to working from home, but it isn't right for everyone.
Consider, for a moment, the following pros and cons:
PRO: Zero Commute! Of course one of the best benefits of working from home is eliminating that stressful commute we all hate. For some, their commute is so long that up to four hours or more are lost in their day just getting to and from the office. Imagine waking up in the morning and your commute consists of walking ten feet to your desk (in your jammies)!
CON: Seclusion From Coworkers A real obstacle that many telecommuters face is a huge lack of interaction with their coworkers. When you go from working in a bustling office and chumming around with your coworkers to working at home by yourself, it can definitely be an adjustment.
PRO: Decrease Your Stress Levels By working from home you can greatly decrease your stress levels. Depending on your situation, you are more in control of when, how and where you complete your job. Being at home makes getting other things done easier such as getting kids off to school and preparing meals.
CON: Structure And Discipline Are Still Required Just because one works from home doesn’t mean they get to do whatever they want and all day’s a party. It’s important to realize that you’ll have to be highly disciplined and focused. By creating a solid routine you will have the structure required to make the most of each day.
I could go on with more advantages and disadvantages to working from home but I would be here all day!
