Telecommuting Tips for Success

Working from home (otherwise known as telecommuting) seems like a dream come true for most of the people who first learn about the possibilities, but such an arrangement can also quickly turn into a nightmare of disorder and chaos if you don't prepare yourself for the challenges you may face as a telecommuter.

Some of the most common challenges that arise are:  lack of motivation, disorganization, underestimating the level of commitment necessary, and more.

In order to make your telecommuting career as successful as possible, keep the following tips in mind:

Self-motivation is key.

When you work at home, you usually don't have a boss hanging over your shoulder, making sure you get your work done.  You've got endless tempting distractions that can threaten your concentration, like television, internet access, and even unexpected calls or visits from friends and loved ones.

Telecommuting is no different than other work arrangements in the sense that you simply MUST show up and get your work done each day.  If you don't, you’ll earn less money – or even get fired.

Finding ways to keep yourself motivated is key in being a successful telecommuter.  The good news is that there are endless ways to do so!  Getting a job you enjoy is a good first step because you'll actually look forward to working each day.  Beyond that, you could exercise, meditate, take a shower and get fully dressed before beginning work for the day – or anything that will clear your mind and get you into "production mode".

Take your commitment seriously.

When you accept a telecommuting position, you are making a commitment to your employer, and your employer is counting on you to follow through on your promises.  For this reason, telecommuting jobs usually require a certain level of maturity and responsibility.  You need to be committed to getting your work done each day, even on those days when you'd rather be doing something else.

One good way to keep your commitment strong in your mind is to spend a few minutes each day remembering why you wanted to work from home.  Was it to spend more time with your family?  Get out of the rat race?  Save time and money?  Enjoy more freedom?  Honoring your commitment to your employer will help you do all of this.

Strive for work/life balance.

Most people have the perception that working from home is easy – at least easier than working outside the home.  In many ways this is true, but I can speak from experience when I say that it's very easy to let your job take over your life!  Since your office is only a few steps away, you can find yourself working longer hours in order to earn more money, and before long you realize that the rest of your life is out of balance.

One good way to avoid this is to decide ahead of time how many hours you plan to work each day and/or week, set up a definite work schedule, and then stick to it.

This is sometimes easier said than done, but in the long run you’ll be much happier for the effort – and have a successful telecommuting career to show for it.
